


{"id":199,"date":"2006-06-01T13:00:30","date_gmt":"2006-06-01T13:00:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/informatech.energir.com\/?p=199"},"modified":"2021-04-15T15:34:56","modified_gmt":"2021-04-15T20:34:56","slug":"199","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/informatech.energir.com\/?p=199&lang=en","title":{"rendered":"How to make fire tube boilers even more efficient!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"intro\">The Qu&eacute;bec market has a great many fire tube boilers, appreciated for their simple construction and affordable cost.<\/p>\n<p class=\"texte-courant\">A fire tube boiler can be recognized by its cylindrical shape. Inside this cylinder is&nbsp;the firebox, a large-diameter tube in which natural gas is burned, as well as several tubes of smaller diameters, which we call convection tubes. The combustion gases are cooled inside these tubes. The firebox and the convection tubes are submerged&nbsp;in water, which they heat to produce steam or hot water. The combustion of natural gas is effected through a pressurized burner,&nbsp;to which the combustion air is routed by&nbsp;a forced draft fan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"texte-courant\">Two, three and four-pass fire tube boilers exist (the figure indicates the number of times combustion gases pass through).&nbsp;A higher number of passes generally&nbsp;means increased efficiency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"texte-courant\">In fire tube boilers, because the combustion gases pass inside the tubes and the heat migrates out through the tube walls and into the water to be heated, heat transfer performance is mainly induced by the convection heat transfer coefficient. If we want to increase this coefficient, we simply have to increase the turbulence inside<br>\nthe convection tube.<\/p>\n<p class=\"texte-courant\">Two ways of increasing turbulence have been measured and evaluated by the Natural Gas Technologies Center (NGTC): corrugated tubes and the insertion&nbsp;of turbulators.<\/p>\n<p class=\"texte-courant\">With corrugated tubes, the purpose is to increase the internal roughness of the convection tubes while giving a direction&nbsp;to the flow of combustion gases. Grooves are factory-created inside each tube.&nbsp;This solution calls for the tubes to be changed completely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"texte-courant\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_209\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 190px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/informatech.energir.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20-1-2-photo11.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-209\" title=\"20-1-2-photo1\" src=\"https:\/\/informatech.energir.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20-1-2-photo11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"190\" height=\"209\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Corrugated tube<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p class=\"texte-courant\">The same principle is applied for the turbulator, except that it is inserted into&nbsp;the existing convection tube by means&nbsp;of a circular metal rod.<\/p>\n<p class=\"texte-courant\"><a href=\"https:\/\/informatech.energir.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20-1-2-graph1-en.gif\" data-rel=\"lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-210\" title=\"20-1-2-graph1-en\" src=\"https:\/\/informatech.energir.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20-1-2-graph1-en.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"335\" height=\"229\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"texte-courant\">To quantify the performance of these two solutions, the NGTC tested a two-pass fire tube boiler with a capacity of 175&#8197;BHP (5,550 lb\/h of steam produced at 125&#8197;psig).<\/p>\n<p class=\"texte-courant\">The tests were designed to measure steam production as well as the efficiency and pressure loss at different operating speeds. The tests were performed with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 15px; color: #000000; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, 'Nimbus Sans L', sans-serif; line-height: 18px;\">smooth convection tubes;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 15px; color: #000000; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, 'Nimbus Sans L', sans-serif; line-height: 18px;\">corrugated tubes;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 15px; color: #000000; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, 'Nimbus Sans L', sans-serif; line-height: 18px;\">turbulators.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"texte-courant\">The results obtained are presented in the following table. In the case of a boiler operating at 75% of its rated&nbsp;load, 2,000 hours per year, we can expect a simple return on investment in one month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"texte-courant\">For three-pass boilers, a smaller gain in efficiency of around 1% to 3% must be expected, since this type of boiler already performs better. In the case of four-pass boilers, the gains in efficiency are considered negligible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"texte-courant\">Thus, for fire tube boilers on which the convection tubes must be changed,&nbsp;the corrugated tube option is quite attractive. If the existing tubes are in&nbsp;good condition, the addition of turbu-lators can be considered.
