One of its strategies revolves around new natural gas engines that provide an efficient alternative to conventional diesel units, including the Cummins X15N, which will hit the market in 2023&ndash;2024. Read on to learn more about this new technology and its potential for decarbonizing trucking.<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-8017-0-0-1\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-last-child\" data-index=\"1\"><div class=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\">\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<h3>On the right track<\/h3>\n<p>Road transportation is responsible for nearly 35% of Qu&eacute;bec&rsquo;s GHG emissions*, and diesel engines are one of the main culprits. That&rsquo;s why alternative fuel engines are emerging as a viable option for decarbonizing the trucking industry. In recent years, manufacturers have developed increasingly powerful natural gas engines that are helping companies get on the path to sustainability.<\/p>\n<h3>New horizons<\/h3>\n<p>PACCAR, one of the world&rsquo;s largest truck manufacturers, has officially announced that it will offer the Cummins X15N 15 L natural gas engine in Peterbilt and Kenworth trucks. The trucks are expected to start rolling off the assembly line in 2024 and will allow trucking companies to reap the environmental and economic benefits of natural gas for an even wider range of heavy-duty transport applications.<\/p>\n<h3>The best of both worlds<\/h3>\n<p>While the Cummins 12 L natural gas engine&mdash;the most powerful of its kind to date&mdash;maxed out at 400 HP, the new 15 L engine will deliver up to 500 HP and 1,850 lb-ft. of torque, enough for a gross vehicle weight of 52 tons or 115,000 lb. (see detailed specs opposite). For example, the province is getting six new public refuelling stations for compressed natural gas (CNG) by 2024, in Drummondville, Abitibi, Tremblant, Saint-F&eacute;licien, L&eacute;vis, and Qu&eacute;bec City. Those stations will tie into the existing network of nine stations already in service and open up a new corridor all the way to Abitibi.<\/p>\n<p>New regulations have recently been adopted to promote the use of natural gas trucks and should facilitate the transition to this energy source. And the new <a href=\"https:\/\/informatech.energir.com\/en\/what-you-need-to-know-about-the-new-maintenance-facilities-code-for-natural-gas-vehicle-ngv-and-other-alternative-fueled-vehicles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CSA B401 Code<\/a> for maintenance facilities for alternative fuel vehicles clarifies and improves repair and maintenance standards for natural gas vehicles, among other things.<\/p>\n<h3>Shifting into high gear<\/h3>\n<p>Transporters can now take their emissions reduction efforts even further with to renewable compressed natural gas (RNG-C), a renewable version of CNG. Renewable natural gas (RNG) is a 100% renewable source of energy produced from organic waste. Not only is RNG perfectly interchangeable with conventional natural gas with the same equipment, it also creates considerably fewer GHG emissions&mdash;an undeniable plus for companies looking to decarbonize.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pgc-8017-2-1\" class=\"panel-grid-cell\"><div id=\"panel-8017-2-1-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-image panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"5\"><div class=\"panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-8017-2-1-0\"><div class=\"so-widget-sow-image so-widget-sow-image-default-17bc2272b535\">\n\n<div class=\"sow-image-container\">\n\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/informatech.energir.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Network-public-natural-gas-stations_215pourcent.jpg\" width=\"1202\" height=\"1112\" srcset=\"https:\/\/informatech.energir.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Network-public-natural-gas-stations_215pourcent.jpg 1202w, https:\/\/informatech.energir.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Network-public-natural-gas-stations_215pourcent-300x278.jpg 300w, https:\/\/informatech.energir.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Network-public-natural-gas-stations_215pourcent-1024x947.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/informatech.energir.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Network-public-natural-gas-stations_215pourcent-768x710.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1202px) 100vw, 1202px\" alt=\"Network of public natural gas stations\" class=\"so-widget-image\"\/>\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-8017-3\" class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\"><div id=\"pgc-8017-3-0\" class=\"panel-grid-cell\"><div id=\"panel-8017-3-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child\" data-index=\"6\"><div class=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\">\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<h3>RNG is making headway<\/h3>\n<p>In Qu&eacute;bec, four natural gas production sites are already up and running, and the sector is booming here and across North America. Just look at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energir.com\/en\/about\/media\/news\/energir-developpement-et-nature-energy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the recent partnership between &Eacute;nergir and Nature Energy<\/a> to produce up to 200 million m3 of RNG per year. The provincial government has also committed to supporting RNG uptake and has already set minimum injection targets for &Eacute;nergir that are expected to increase over time. As companies start setting carbon neutrality targets, they will increasingly require carriers to pitch in by opting for RNG.
